This rare 18th c. Spanish colonial polychrome on gesso carved wood figure of the Virgin Mary is a precious and moving treasure.

Santos played an important role in bringing Catholicism to the new world with the Spanish colonists and missionaries. These hand carved religious figures were used as icons to explain the major figures- Mary, Christ, and the Saints to new indigenous converts. They became a folk art tradition in the Spanish new world from Peru to as far north as New Mexico and Colorado.  This Santos is from Colorado.  It was lovingly cared for over hundreds of years with repairs and paint.  At 300+ years old, this Santos is in beautiful condition for it’s age.
